AGM battery replacement

If your car came with an AGM battery, it needs another one. AGM batteries handle start-stop cycles, heavy electronics and heat better than standard flooded batteries.

What AGM means

AGM stands for absorbent glass mat. Instead of plates sitting in free liquid acid, the electrolyte is held in fiberglass mats packed tightly between the plates. The battery is sealed, doesn't spill, resists vibration and recovers better from being drained deeply, which is exactly what a start-stop system does dozens of times on every drive.

Many newer cars come with AGM batteries from the factory, especially those with start-stop, lots of driver-assist electronics, or the battery mounted inside the cabin or trunk. Replacing one with a cheaper flooded battery shortens battery life, can upset the charging strategy and sometimes disables start-stop altogether.

How to tell

The tech confirms it from your year, make and model, but these are strong clues:

  • Your car has automatic engine start-stop
  • The current battery's label says AGM
  • The battery sits in the trunk, under a seat or inside the cabin
  • It's a newer European model or a vehicle with a lot of electronic features
  • The owner's manual specifies an AGM battery

+ 02  Upgrading

Can I upgrade from flooded to AGM?

Often, yes, and it can be worth it in hot climates, on vehicles with big audio systems or accessories, or for cars that sit a lot. The battery has to be the right size and the car's charging system has to suit it. Going the other way, from AGM down to flooded, is the swap to avoid. See AGM vs flooded for the full comparison.

Questions about AGM battery replacement

Do AGM batteries last longer?

In demanding use, often yes. They tolerate deep discharges, vibration and heat better than flooded batteries. Life still depends on climate and driving.

Does an AGM battery need to be registered?

On many vehicles, yes, especially with start-stop or a battery management system. Registration tells the car a new battery is installed and which type it is.

Why does AGM cost more?

The construction is more involved and the materials cost more. On cars designed for AGM, the battery pays for itself by lasting and by keeping start-stop and electronics working as intended.
