Why a voltmeter alone isn't enough
A battery can show a healthy 12.6 volts at rest and still fail the moment the starter asks for 200 amps. Voltage tells you charge, not health. A real car battery test puts the battery under a load, or measures its internal condition with a conductance tester, and compares what it can deliver against its rated cold cranking amps.
Testing is also how you avoid buying a battery you didn't need. If the battery is healthy but run down, a charge fixes it. If the alternator isn't charging, a new battery would just die again. The test tells you which.
+ 01 Reading the numbers
What resting voltage tells you
With the engine off for a while, a 12-volt battery's resting voltage is a rough guide to its state of charge:
- 12.6 V or a bit higher: fully charged
- About 12.4 V: roughly three-quarters charged
- About 12.2 V: around half charged, and it should be recharged
- 12.0 V or lower: close to flat
- With the engine running, a healthy charging system usually shows about 13.7 to 14.7 V
+ 02 When to test
The right times to check
Test once a year after the battery's third birthday, and twice a year in hot climates where batteries wear out sooner. Before winter is the most useful time almost everywhere, because cold is when a weak battery finally fails. Also test after the car has sat for weeks, after a jump start, or any time the engine starts to crank more slowly than it used to.
Questions about car battery test
Can a battery test fine and still be bad?
A quick voltage check can miss it, which is why a load or conductance test matters. Intermittent faults, like an internal break that only opens with vibration, can also slip by, so the tech looks at symptoms as well as numbers.
Is the test free if I buy a battery?
The test is part of every replacement. Pricing for a test on its own varies by location; ask when you call.
How much life does my battery have left?
The tester gives a state-of-health reading. As a rule, a battery testing well below its rated CCA, or one that's weak and more than three or four years old, is near the end.
