What Chicago does to a battery

Winter is the test in Chicago. As the temperature drops, a battery's available cranking power drops with it, while cold, thickened oil makes the engine harder to turn. Around zero degrees a battery can lose roughly half of its starting power, right when the car needs the most. Batteries actually age more slowly where summers are mild, so many reach four or five years here, but one that has lost capacity gets found out on the first sub-zero morning.

From the Chicago notes

  • When arctic air drops temperatures below zero, engine oil thickens, batteries lose much of their cranking power and starters struggle.
  • Frozen door locks, dead batteries and blown fuses from overworked heater fans are routine January problems, and they tend to arrive all at once on the first truly frigid morning.

+ 03  How it works

One call, one visit, done

  1. Step 1

    Call

Tell the Chicago tech your year, make and model, and exactly where the car is parked.

  2. Step 2

    Test

Battery, alternator and starter draw are checked first. No battery sold unless it's the battery.

  3. Step 3

    Install

Settings saved, terminals cleaned, hold-down tight, registered with the car if it needs it.

  4. Step 4

    Recycle

The old battery leaves with the tech for recycling. Most visits wrap up in under an hour.

+ 05  Questions

Chicago battery questions

How long does a car battery last in Chicago?

Often four to five years. Cool summers are easy on battery chemistry, but winter is where a weak battery gets caught, so a fall test matters more than the date on the label.

How many cold cranking amps do I need in Chicago?

At least what your vehicle's manufacturer specifies, and a little above it is reasonable in a cold climate. CCA is measured at 0°F, which is exactly the kind of morning that matters here.

Can a battery be replaced outside in the cold?

Yes. A battery swap is a quick job and the tech does it in driveways, parking lots and garages all winter. If the car is snowed in, clear a path to the hood and the tech handles the rest.

When should I replace my battery before a Chicago winter?

Fall is the right time. A battery that's weak in October will almost certainly fail on the first morning below zero, and that's when everyone in the city is looking for help at once. A quick load test in your garage or on the street shows whether it has enough cranking power left. If it doesn't, replacing it before the cold arrives saves a lot of hassle later.

Do you bring the battery to me in Chicago?

Yes. Call the number on this page with your year, make and model and where the car is. The tech brings the right battery, tests the charging system and installs it on the spot, at home, at work or at the roadside.

What if it isn't the battery?

The battery and charging system get tested before anything is replaced. If the alternator, starter or something else is to blame, you hear that first, and the Mobile Auto Repair page for Chicago sends a mechanic for those repairs.

Do you take the old battery?

Yes. The old battery leaves with the tech and goes to be recycled, so there's nothing for you to haul anywhere.

Not the battery?

Need a mechanic in Chicago?

If the test points to the alternator, starter or anything else, Mobile Auto Repair sends a mobile mechanic to Chicago for the repair.
